OFFICIAL SL3S QYMTTA*

* - Questions You Might Think To Ask! Very similar to FAQ. The Photo Wranglers will post other Q&A's as they arise as the contest gets down the trail a bit. So check back often!

  1. What the heck do you mean by "in situ" in Rule CC4? Excellent question. In situ means the subject of a photo entry is in the original position in which you found it. Do not physically or digitally move or add anything into or out of a frame. Notwhile you're getting the shot nor afterward by software manipulation. Photos may be cropped and enhanced (e.g. contrast) with software.
  2. I got a picture of a passion flower with a Gulf fritillary caterpillar in the frame. Can I submit it in the FLORA category and FAUNA category? You decide which category but it has to be one category per photo and no photograph can be entered more than once! Judges will look at photo composition. A judge might feel the Gulf fritillary caterpillar on the passion flower highlights the relationships to the butterfly species's and host plant.
  3. Can only photos taken in  quarter be submitted in that quarter? NO! The photos need only be taken in the contest year. You can take a photo on August 3, 2009 and wait until June 23, 2010 to enter it. A photo can only be submitted once in the contest year.
  4. Give it to me straight, how am I gonna win a cash-money bounty? That's a easy answer. Enter early and often! There are four quarters and four categories. If you enter ONE photo in each category, each quarter you've given your 16-chances to win a spot in the Bounty Round of 16. Put your photo taking where your strengths are and submit 4 photos entries into that one category per quarter. The contest is designed to maximize opportunities for everyone. On a trip to the park to get that passion flower picture you might find a bunch of Boy Scouts cutting tallow. Get a shot or two of them Scouts, too!
  5. What happens to my photo after I submit it? An official Photo Wrangler (PW) verifies the contestant is registered, entry fee paid or waived and any extra photo fees are paid. Next the PW checks that each photo entry meets the category criteria. A PW CANNOT manipulate or change any entry (i.e. category or size). The PW next checks the photo entry meets the size criteria(no larger than 640x480). If all checks out, the PW will assign a unique ID number to the photo then put all the photos for the quarter together and get them to the judges.
  6. What's the best "sitting-around-the-camp-fire" advice you got?
    • Become familiar with the photo entry process. You are welcome to test run of the photo submission process.
    • Enter early and every quarter.
    • Avoid the end of the quarter rush. If a PW rejects a photo it may be reentered but it must be done before  the quarterly deadline. If you submit an entry at 11:58 PM the night of a quarterly deadline and it is rejected it cannot be resubmitted for that quarter.
    • Avoid the end of the year rush to enter. The last deadline (June 30, 2010) will likely see the greatest amount of entries. By then, 12 of the 16 Bounty Round slots would've been decided.
    • Think categories and subject when taking photos. Enter ALL the categories. Some categories may not be as competitive as others. SLSP has regularly scheduled and several special events a year. Flora and fauna vary with the seasons.
    • Get to know the park and its staff. There are park maps and trail information at the ELC. Ask the park staff or a Photo Wrangler for advice (e.g. Want to photograph ducks? Do so in winter).
    • Get permission from the SLSP & ELC staff before venturing into areas that are closed to the public.
  7. Who are them judges? There are three quarterly judges. The quarterly judges will be drawn from the FOSL Board of Directors, SLSP & ELC staff and a volunteer with nature photographic experience. The Bounty Round judges will be a panel of experienced and/or professional nature photographers, FOSL BOD and SLSP staff.
  8. How do I get in touch with a judge? You don't! All judging decisions are final. A contestant may be disqualified if a judge is contacted by ANYONE about one of their photo entries. Direct all complaints, moans and groans to the SL3S Photo Wranglers.
  9. My brother, a renowned National Geo photographer, says my photo of a Bald eagle gliding over the misty, morning calm waters of Lake Houston is the best he's seen. Which category should I enter it in? None of them. SL3S photo entries must be taken within the confines of SLSP.
  10. I got a suggestion about making the SL3S better how do I make it? Tell your friendly Photo Wrangler your insights and suggestions and experiences.
